Lack of interest does not mean he doesn't support your professional growth. Maybe it only means he doesn't see your excitement over what you learned so quickly, especially if you surprised yourself. A drawing buddy is a good thing. I met students from lots of places and we stayed in touch. When you get religion about anything that has nothing to do with your relationship, won't impact it at all - seek like-minded professionals. Not all our needs are met by our inner circle. And there is nothing wrong with that! There is a lot very right about that. Would he be at all intertersting if he were exactly like you?
