Hi guys, sorry about the sound quality but you'll get the idea from just watching anyway. I use the same technique for other areas of large colour such as water or grass. You can then add more texture by colouring over the pastels with colour pencils or markers

Hi Andrew,

I like your video, great job, thanks.

What stuff did you use to apply on yellow trace so it sticks on to the original drawing? Did you cut the sky area with knife or you never cut?  Can you upload the picture of the finished sky on the video so I can send it to members in closer view.  Video is kind of too far to apprecaite.

Will do Mike, I lightly sprayed the tracing paper with spray adhesive and then loosely cut out the mask with a scalpel. Your touch needs to be quite sensitive so as to cut through he trace but not the paper. I just cut around organic shapes like trees very roughly and rub of the excess pastel afterwards. I recommend fixing the pastels to avoid any smudging as you are working on the colour drawing.

Thanks for the great video!! Question: Does the spray adhesive affect the rest of the rendering or do you clean it off with some sort of eraser before continuing on the trees and architecture?

Thanks again.

I enjoyed the video as well Andrew.  I also want to know about the effect the spray adhesive has on the rest of the drawing.  I also, want to know about your technique of using color markers over the pastels.  I would think that the pastel would transfer to your markers and ruin them.  Do you do darker marker over lighter pastels?  What are the general rules you need to follow to complete the look?  Thanks

Hi Guys, Spray the adhesive lightly over the tracing paper and fan it a bit so that it's not too tacky before placing onto your drawing. In this case I used an adhesive that I wasn't used too and it turned out to be a bit too strong. Hence you can see how I had some trouble peeling off the mask. Any residue on your drawing can be wiped off with a tissue with no real affect on your paper. On the second point with markers over pastels, they are fine if you fix the pastel with spray fixative. You can use a light blue for instance on the base of the clouds to add in some shadows or if you have done some water in pastels you can add in some reflections with a marker. Start light and work up to darker colours. Any colour marker that you put over pastels will darken it so it is best to go lightly and just give a wash of markers to see the effect. Hope this helps.

Yes, this does help.  Thanks!  What brand of adhesive would you suggest using?

I use a brand made by National Art Materials which may not be available in the US. It doesn't really matter just make sure your mask isn't too sticky when you spray so keep the can a good foot or so from the mask when spraying
